We are hiring a Shift Supervisor

Half time, salaried position at $16,640 per year with 2 weeks vacation.

The Shift Supervisor is responsible for leading all barista and service volunteers during their shifts, in the efficient operation of the Café. They are to foster a positive environment which provides consistent, efficient, and friendly service – ensuring a quality experience for customers and volunteers.

A Shift Supervisor works on a team with three others, a fellow Shift Supervisor, a Café Community Development Manager, and a Volunteer Community Development Manager. Together, the team will help create the tone and personality of the Café by providing ongoing volunteer training, customer service, and product knowledge and education. They encourage safe practices and demonstrate a commitment to the Cafe’s role as a community leader.

This position reports directly to the Café Community Development Manager, providing feedback and recommendations regarding the execution and effectiveness of the Café in achieving its mission and vision.

Summary of Key Responsibilities:
Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:
• Acts with integrity, honesty and knowledge that promote the philosophy, culture,
values, and mission of the Café.

• Works alongside volunteers to provide exceptional customer service.

• Anticipates customer and store needs by evaluating the environment, listening to customers and volunteers.

• Communicates information to the other shift supervisor and the community development managers so that the team can respond as necessary to create and maintain the culture of the Café during each shift.

• Assists with ongoing volunteer training by positively reinforcing successful performance and giving respectful and encouraging coaching as needed. Reinforces use of appropriate procedures.

• Work with volunteers, teaching and assigning tasks based on cafe needs and volunteer skill and interest. Teaches volunteers new skills, consistent with cafe values of empowerment and lifelong learning.

• Provides feedback to community development managers regarding volunteer and shift strengths and needs.

• Communicates with staff orally and though the log book to provide consistent information to volunteers, supervisor, and managers and to address volunteer concerns.

• Creates a positive learning environment by providing clear, specific, timely and respectful coaching and feedback to volunteers on shift to ensure operational excellence and to increase volunteer capacity.

• Helps to develop community feel in the cafe through interaction with customers and volunteers.

• Follows all cash management and cash register policies and ensures proper cash management practices are followed by shift volunteers.

• Maintains regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.

• Follows health, safety and sanitation guidelines for all products and procedures.

• Supplemental shopping for bread and other products at local stores.

• Follows Common Ground operational policies and procedures, including those for safety and security, to ensure the safety of all volunteers during each shift.

• Follows all cash management and cash register policies and ensures proper cash management practices are followed by shift team.

• Maintains regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.

• Provides quality beverages and food products consistently for all customers by adhering to all recipe and presentation standards.

• May involve occasional periods of being on call.

• Will take leadership and responsibility in one or more of the following areas (to be divided among team members):
– menu planning and preparation
– shopping
– ordering
– maintenance
– adherence to cleaning schedules

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
• Ability to direct the work of others

• Ability to learn quickly

• Effective oral and written communication skills

• Knowledge of the retail environment

• Strong interpersonal skills

• Ability to work as part of a team

Customer service experience in a retail or restaurant environment required. Must be 18 or older.
