Volunteer

Volunteering is at the heart of Common Ground Community Cafe.

What is a typical volunteer shift?

Our volunteer baristas typically work 3 hour shifts, once a week or every other week. Each shift has at least two baristas making coffee and lattes, baking muffins and cookies, and generally keeping the cafe running.

Our baristas love volunteering to:

  • meet people in their community
  • gain work experience and references
  • complete volunteer hours
  • enjoy free cafe drinks & handmade food
  • have fun learning how to bake or how to make drinks

The secret that we share with everyone is you’re helping to build this community… but it’s a lot of fun while you’re at it.

Looking to connect in a different role than a volunteer barista?

We also have volunteers:

  • Bake on-site– primarily preparing muffin and cookie batter to be baked fresh daily.
  • Clean– we can’t function without these day-to-day operations.
  • Set-up and take down– for open-mic and music performances.
  • Decorate seasonally– perfect for younger volunteers who want to help.
  • Do what they love– if you have a community event or creative idea you want to suggest, we would love to support you.

Who can volunteer? What ages?

We love being a shared space that invites people from all backgrounds and ages to come together! We work hard to make opportunities to everyone to be able to connect.

Alberta’s Provincial Labour Laws requires us to meet these standards:

  • Youth ages 12-14 can volunteer as a baker/barista alongside a parent or another adult directly responsible for them.
  • Youth ages 15-17 can volunteer alongside another 18+ volunteer. We can coordinate to make sure this standard is met for you.

How can I join the team? What if I have more questions?

If you’re interested in joining the team, please fill out our Volunteer Form below and we’ll get in touch as quick as we can.

We usually start off by meeting with you one-on-one to hear what you’re excited about and to get you doing what you love. Depending on your availability and when you’ve offered to volunteer, your training will be scheduled. Then you’ll be on our team!

If you need more information, fill out the form on the contact page, or come on by to check things out.
