Volunteering is at the heart of Common Ground Community Cafe.

Our volunteer baristas work 3 hour shifts, mostly once a week or every other week. Each shift has at least two baristas making coffee and specialty drinks like lattes, baking muffins and cookies, and generally keeping the cafe running.

Whenever someone asks about volunteering here, the most common comment from our baristas is, “oh, you really should, it’s so much fun.” And that’s the secret that we share with everyone, you’re helping to build this community…but it’s a lot of fun while you’re at it.

In addition to our barista staff, we also have other opportunities to pitch in…
On-site baking, primarily preparing muffin and cookie batter to be baked fresh daily.
Cleaning…we know there are folks out there who just love to make a place shine.
Set-up and take down for open-mic and music performances.
Seasonal decorating and un-decorating, perfect for younger volunteers who want to help out.
And of course there are always minor repairs and touch-up jobs to be done. If you’re one of those handy types who knows their way around a tool box…or if you’ve got a bit of that MacGyver spirit in you…we’d love to enlist your help.

One of the most common questions we get about the cafe is whether or not this is a good place for youth to volunteer. The short answer is, sure is…but there are some restrictions on younger workers set by provincial labour rules in terms of tasks and hours. It’s our policy that youth 12-14 can volunteer along with a parent or another adult who is directly responsible for them, for youth 15-17 we make sure one of the volunteers on that shift is 18+. Best bet is to get in touch and we’ll work with you on finding a fit on the cafe staff.

If you’re interested in joining the team, please fill out our Volunteer Form below and we’ll get in touch as quick as we can.
